Sisu: Continuing the sad unfortunate tale of the Baudelaire orphans, we follow them to Uncle Monty's home deep in the countryside where, for a short time at least, they are happy and content. However once again Count Olaf appears and tries his very best to ruin everything and get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune. Through Snicket's dry wit and ironic humour we find Olaf succeeding until Mr Poe makes an appearance and the orphans begin to fight back. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining with the continued feel of very very cautious optimism that filled the first book.

Arvamus: Mu lemmik osa filmist, jään ootama, kas mõni teine raamat, mis filmist välja jäetud, on ehk veel parem. Kohati tekitab küll sellist ängistust, et wtf, miks te kuulata ei või?!

Your time might be better filled with something more palatable such as eating your vegetables or feeding them to someone else.

How will they survive the treacherous, snow-covered peaks with not much more than a ukulele and a bread knife, especially in the face of the "organised, ill-tempered" snow gnats? They are saved in the nick of time by a submarine, The QueeQueg, which is manned by a cast of fascinating characters that contains Captain Widdershins, his stepdaughter Fiona and their long lost friend Phil, from the Lucky Smells Lumbermill.
The crews task is to retrieve a sugar bowl before the childrens evil nemesis, Count Olaf, gets to it first. After serious study, the location of said sugar bowl is determined as the Gorgonian Grotto, coincidentally the home of the incredible poisonous mushroom, Medusoid Mycelium. Its not long, however, before their dangerous mission is interrupted by another disaster--Sunny has come into contact with a mushroom and she needs help fast. This is exactly the sort of moment when it would be least helpful for Olaf to appear on the scene which of course he does.

Arvamus: Väga hea ja huvitav raamat. Mõnus, et viimased raamatud väga seotud üksteisega on, mitte üks osa ja teine osa aga päriselt jätkub. Põnev!

Sisu:The situation quickly and--this being the Baudelaires--predictably deteriorates. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves tossed in a storm so terrible that our beloved narrator spends four pages describing how he cannot describe it. From this point on, fans of the series' smarty-pants wordplay and acrobatic narrative can rest assured that they're in for more of the same (and how) in this 368-page finale, and Daniel Handler's deadpan Snicket continues to tutor a generation in self-referential humor (including one particularly funny bit regarding three very short men carrying a large, flat piece of wood, painted to look like a living room).
There's one big question, though, for anyone who's made it through "the thirteenth chapter of the thirteenth volume in this sad history": is the final book a fitting end? That question is probably best-answered by one of The End's most oft-repeated phrases: It depends on how you look at it. Those looking for conclusive resolution to the series' many, many mysteries may be disappointed, although some big questions do get explicit answers. Not surprisingly for a work so deliberately labyrinthine, though, even the absence of an answer can be sort of an answer--and reaction to The End can be something of a Rorschach test for readers. Or, as Lemony Snicket says, "Perhaps you dont know yet what the end really means.
